Basically, any that you find made with plastic beads, you can make with pearls and gem or glass beads. Freshwater pearls are quite affordable and much more environmentally friendly than plastic beads. In addition, you can pass homemade pearl crafts down to your children and grandchildren.
Pearl and Bead Wreaths
You will need five 8mm white pearl beads, five 6mm white pearl beads, ten spacers in gold or silver, gold or red cording or ribbon, crafting wire (half-hard in 24-gauge works well), wire cutters, and a glue gun or craft glue.
Thread your beads on the craft wire, alternating between gold and white and placing the spacers between each bead. Once all ten beads are strung on the wire, cut it with wire cutters - make sure you leave enough to close the wreath. Now, twist together your two ends and cut off the remaining wire.
Tie your hanging cord or ribbon around the area where you fused the wire together. Finally, form a small bow from your cord or ribbon material and glue it on top of the wreath. Not only will the bow function as your decorative accent, but will further hide where you closed the wire.
While these pearl and bead wreaths would look great on a Christmas tree, don't stop there. You can tie them to gift bags and packages as well, adding a wonderful personal touch to the holidays. Wreaths aren't just for Christmas - they add a nice touch to any gift wrapping especially if pastel colors are used. Try adding a few to a baby shower gift!
Pearl and Bead Garland
You can use fishing line, fine gauge crafting wire, nylon string, or even needle and thread to make garlands. If you use thread, you need to make sure however that the needle will fit through the hole in your beads.
Homemade garland will look great if you alternate your pearls with glass or clear quartz beads to add some sparkle. Again, you can use garland on a tree, but also consider using it to decorate a window treatment or lamp in pastel colors as well.
Embellishments
You can add some appeal to your gift wrapping or baskets by gluing on tiny pearls in creative designs. These are all also perfect projects if your kids have snow days and are sitting at home bored. Or, if your kids are out of school for the summer or the holiday season, these pearl and bead crafts will give you something to do as a family.
